GXFC Launches U13 Girls with Tourney Win

On July 15, 2014 it was doubtful that Georgia Express would be able to field a U13 Athena team.  It had been touch and go for a few weeks as to whether we would have enough athletes to fill out a roster.  After it became official GXFC would have the team, we had to get them practicing and even more important introduced to each.  There were uniforms to order and forms to fill out but more importantly there was a season to get ready which meant work to be done on the field.  The new team started working and slowly but surely became a team, and worked harder and got closer with each practice.  When they started practicing, they only had about 5 weeks to get ready for their first live game competition in the RYSA Fall Classic tournament.

No one had a clue what to expect, not even the coach.  Yes there was talent and there were athletes on the team but would they be ready to play against others?  They held their own scrimmaging against the boys U13 team leading up to the tournament, but a real game that matters was going to be a whole different story.  They just wanted to play soccer and play it on the big field 11v11 for the first time.

The first game was at 8am, over an hour from home on the other side of Atlanta.  Even at 8am it was already hot and muggy and unfortunately the girls went down a goal early.  They didn’t get down and just played harder to tie it up.  The first game as a team ended up as a 1-1 tie.  That was huge for confidence and made them want to play harder and get that first win, which they did at 12pm that day against Roswell Santos. That team was big and physical, but again the girls fought and played hard and came back to take the win 2-0.  Being 1-0-1 in their bracket was good enough for first place and they had to play SSA Chelsea on Sunday morning at 8am back down in Hampton, Ga.  After falling behind 1-0 early, the Express fought back and won the game 3-1 on outstanding consistent defense.  As the game went on they continued to pressure SSA and took control of possession and the game.

Winning the semifinal game put this new Express team in the championship game for their first ever tournament that took place at the RYSA Soccer Complex in Conyers, GA.  The championship game was a rematch of the Roswell Santos game from Saturday that was controlled from the start by the Express with the same outstanding consistent defense that led to great ball movement and timely great shooting.  Up 1-0 at halftime, the girls were fighting for every 50/50 ball and helping one another.  Each team scored a goal early in the second half, and just as quickly the 2-1 lead was extended to 3-1.  Our keeper shut the door by stopping a direct kick at the top of the 18.  The final was 4-1 and the Georgia Express FC U13 Athena team finished the tournament 3-0-1 and took home the RYSA Fall Classic championship trophy.
